As we fast approach the end of the year it’s time to start thinking about how we might celebrate the end of 2011 and welcome the start of 2012. Bath is a fabulous place to spend New Year’s Eve and here at Guide2Bath we’ve put together a guide to some of the best events taking place this year.
Bath Theatre Royal – Dick Whittington and New Year’s Eve Gala
A visit to the matinee performance of this year’s pantomime which stars Naomi Wilkinson as Dick Whittington, Mark Moraghan as King Rat and Chris Harris as Sarah the Cook would make a lovely family treat to kick off the New Year’s Eve celebrations. The show begins at 2.00PM and tickets are priced from £15 to £26.50.
There is no evening pantomime performance as the theatre will be hosting its annual New Year’s Eve Gala. Bath Philharmonia will be joined by violinist Tamsin Waley-Cohen; mezzo soprano Kate Symonds-Joy and Tenor Daniel Joy for a programme featuring music by Tchaikovsky, Bizet, Strauss and Glinka and including a Last Night of the Proms style finale of popular classics and rousing music. The concert starts at 10.00PM and is preceded by a canapé reception and dinner from 6.30PM. Tickets for the concert only are priced from £28 to £38.
The Circo Bar at the Halcyon Hotel will be celebrating New Year’s Eve with a Burlesque Circus Extravaganza featuring lion taming, close-up magic, uni-cycling, cocktail juggling and some classic Burlesque performances. Xtopher and Rudeboy Marcus will be manning the decks and there will be live percussion too. The evening will start at 7.00PM and will go on until the wee small hours of New Year’s Day; tickets cost £15.
One Beaufort at Lambridge is hosting a five course dinner and a 1980’s themed fancy dress party. Dinner will be served at 7.30PM and is ticket only, priced at £45 per head. The party will begin at 9.00PM, admission £10.
Bath’s No 1 Cocktail Bar, located at 4 Edgar Buildings in George Street is hosting a free New Year’s Eve event to mark the end of a record year. From 5.00PM until 8.00PM there will be two-for-one cocktails and from 10.00PM until 4.00AM on New Year’s Day DJ Max Baines will be manning the decks.
Komedia in Westgate Street will be transformed into an Electric Night Garden complete with high flying bees and butterflies this New Year’s Eve as it hosts a massive music mash up featuring special guest DJs such as Congo Natty, FT Tenor Fly, DJ Deekline, Laid Blak, Wheel of Four Tunes, Asian Hawk, The House of Commoners and event host Toby Spin.
Situated at 7 Edgar Buildings in George Street, Aio Sardinia is a Mediterranean grill serving many Sardinian specialities. On New Year’s Eve diners are invited to enjoy a delicious four-course dinner accompanied by live music. Diners at The Chequers at 50 Rivers Street, Bath will be treated to a lavish ten-course tasting menu on New Year’s Eve. The beautifully crafted menu has been designed to impress and is available with or without a selection of carefully chosen wines to match. Every dinner will receive a complimentary ticket to sister pub The Marlborough Tavern’s New Year’s Eve party where there will be dancing and partying until the early hours of 2012.
Dinner £65 per person, £95 inclusive of wines.
Po Na Na
Po Na Na at 8 North Parade is offering a classic New Year’s Eve spectacular with a three themed night incorporating Earth, Heaven and Hell. Welcoming saints and sinners alike they are promising decadence, glamour, indulgence, excess, promiscuity, bad behaviour and good times.
£8 in advance. £10 before 12 midnight, £12 after.
Downstairs at Moles, at 14 George Street, Selective Hearing, Bath’s most forward thinking, ground shaking bass night present special guests including Hackman, Biome, Arkist, Drop/Dead, Shadowfax and Versa; while upstairs Saturday night residents Tom Maddicott and Asian Hawk will be playing house, techno, hip-hop, funk and soul.
Free before 11.00PM, £5 after.
The Pavilion in North Parade Road will be playing host to Bobby Paul as Elton John. Bobby has been performing his tribute to Sir Elton John for more than a decade, working throughout the UK, Europe and many countries worldwide; his act features both live vocals and live piano. New Year’s Eve revellers at the Pavilion will enjoy an as-much-as-you-can-eat and a disco. The fun starts at 7.00PM and goes on until 1.00AM. The dress code is smart/casual. Tickets cost £30.
The theme for New Year’s Eve at the Priory will be James Bond and while guests may not be licensed to kill they can certainly dress to thrill. The evening will begin with a ‘shaken, not stirred’ martini and canapé reception after which guests will enjoy a delicious five-course dinner concocted by Head Chef Sam Moody. After dinner there will be dancing in a heated marquee before everything pauses at midnight when the New Year will be welcomed in with fireworks.
Tickets for non-resident guests £220.
Royal Crescent Hotel
Guests at Bath’s Royal Crescent Hotel can look forward to a glamorous evening with fine food, champagne and dancing to the resident DJ; at midnight a traditional Piper will greet the New Year in style. The evening will include a champagne and canapé reception and a five-course gala dinner with wines.
Tickets £250 per person, payable at the time of booking.
Tickets for the New Year’s Eve Masquerade Ball at Bath’s coolest nightclub are limited to just 75 people, all of whom will get a glass of something interesting as well as canapés and tapas.
The Pump Room
Guests at the Pump Room this New Year’s Eve will be dressed to impress as they enjoy a sparkling reception around the Great Bath followed by a four-course dinner, wine and fantastic entertainment. The evening will begin at 7.00PM and the fun will continue until 1.00AM.
Tickets £90 - £115.
