Victoria Art Gallery Bath: new exhibitions coming soon

26 January 2012

Description:

Two new exhibitions will open at Bath’s Victoria Art Gallery on Saturday 11 February featuring the work of Gillian Ayres RA and David Brayne.

Gillian Ayres is one of the UK’s most celebrated artists; she has long-standing connections with the city of Bath having taught at the Bath Academy of Art in the 1960s.  Gillian is known for painting with bold colours and textures on a large scale, she has collaborated with the local 107 Workshop, among others, to replicate this style in limited editions.  Her show is called Works on Paper and its backbone is the limited editions although it does also contain a group of entirely new paintings.  All works are for sale.

Jon Bennington will be leading a free tour of the exhibition on Friday 02 March, from 12.45PM until 1.15PM.

The second exhibition opening on Saturday 11 February is David Brayne: the Somerset Levels.  David, who is a member of the Royal Watercolour Society, has lived close to the Somerset Levels for many years; the flat, watery landscape touches much of his work, not least in the paints he uses which are mixed from ingredients such as locally sourced ochre.

Admission to the Victoria Art Gallery is free to everyone, although donations are welcome.  The first floor houses the permanent collection while the ground floor is given over to two temporary exhibition spaces which change approximately every two months.

With the exception of some Bank Holidays the gallery is closed on Mondays but opens from 10.00AM to 5.00PM Tuesday to Saturday and from 1.30PM to 5.00PM on Sundays.
