Things to do in Bath this weekend

17 February 2012

Description:

Once again we’ve reached that time of the week when our thoughts start to focus on the weekend, Guide2Bath has a few suggestions for things to do this Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

It seems to be a rare weekend in Bath when theatre lovers aren’t spoilt for choice and this weekend they certainly have plenty to choose from.  Zenith Youth Theatre is at the Kingswood Theatre on Friday and Saturday with their production of 42nd Street, guaranteed to have you singing We’re in the Money and Lullaby of Broadway for weeks to come.  Over at the Mission Theatre the Decent Rogues are back in town, following the show’s Bath premiere in 2011 it’s returned for another visit before opening in London; there will be an evening performance on Friday and both matinee and evening shows on Saturday.

The Rondo at Larkhall has two very different productions on offer this weekend; on Friday evening Julia Gwynne stars as all six of Henry VIII’s wives in Henry VIII and the Royal Wedding Planner, a hilarious, touching and dramatic look at the lives of the king’s jilted wives through the eyes of long-term lady in waiting Jane Parker.  On Saturday comedian Andrew O’Neill presents Alternative which promises to be a funny show by a long-haired man, covering all styles of comedy, some of them twice.

The Theatre Royal has Alan Ayckbourn’s Neighbourhood Watch in the main auditorium on Friday and Saturday while in the Ustinov Studio Tristan Sturrock performs his solo show Mayday Mayday - On 01 May a man in Padstow fell head first off a wall, years later he tries to remember what happened next.  It’s a true story, told by the man who fell.  In the Egg MacHamLear asks whether, if Shakespeare were alive today, would he be writing for soaps?  The play is set in a contemporary East London setting; it opened on Wednesday and is being shown over four evenings before being rolled into an omnibus performance on Sunday to close the Shakespeare Unplugged Festival.

ICIA, the University of Bath’s Institute of Contemporary Interdisciplinary Arts is screening Koyaanisqatsi at 6.00PM on Friday evening.  The film is a true collaboration between the composer and filmmaker and offers a powerful vision of contemporary life in industrialised countries set against the hypnotic, syncopated rhythms that are trademark Philip Glass.  The screening is being presented in association with the university’s Department of Computer Science who will be creating a specially designed, elaborate sound system.

Sports fans will be pleased to know that Bath Rugby are at home on Saturday but disappointed to know that the game has sold out, however there is an opportunity to watch the team’s final preparations for the match against Gloucester Rugby at an open training session being held at the Rec on Friday morning, it starts at 10.15AM and entry is free.

Bath City Football Club are at home this weekend, they play Ebbsfleet United in the Blue Square Premier League; they beat the opposing team 0-3 when they played the away fixture at the end of September so will be hoping for another three points this weekend.  Bath City FC are currently sitting at the bottom of the table while Ebbsfleet are in 15th place.
